Re: Financial Questions

Here's how I did it....25 years ago when I was a budding horticulturist I wanted and needed to go to Mecca...which in the horticulture of that day...was London and the Chelsea Flower Show.  I was in the early days of writing my column, I had little money but a great deal of energy and desire.  This was in the days when the predicessor of FedEx was Purolator Courrier.  They occasionally needed people to travel from JFK in NY to London Heathrow to transport various packets and documents for next day delivery.  All you were permitted to take was one carry on bag and their stuff went on as my luggage.  I would get assignments at the last minute with only 24 hours notice but I got lucky once and had two weeks notice of an outbound trip to London.  Being an optomist I had already contacted the RHS earlier that year and had gotten the press credentials for Chelsea on the off chance that I'd be in London during its run.  Well not only was I in London for all of Chelsea with a press pass but I also had the thrill of being there on the 'Queen's Day', got to take a few pictures of her, did the show on press day and several days after and thought I'd died and went to garden heaven.
On a previous trip I was fortunate enough to travel to Diss to meet Alan and Adrian Bloom and struck up a friendship with Larry Flatman who was their nursery general manager.  He met me at Chelsea and gave me a tour unlike any American is likely to have.
I returned to Chelsea three times and I'm a firm believer of where there's a will there's a way.  Much to my dismay though, now that money is not a limiting factor...time is.
I don't know if any companies still employ freelance courriers...but that was the route back then.
