I am a lawyer and contracts can be changed almost anytime, including retroactively. Every contract I've ever written has contained a clause allowing amendment if in writing and agreed upon by the parties.

No contract can be changed unilaterally (but hopefully you're not letting the other side dictate the initial terms either...)
