RE: Vegetable seed needed to feed one person

Jeff,

I already did my column on that…but more will be forthcoming J I am trying to figure out, by head count as well as by needy families in the areas how many seeds of each variety to give per correctional facility in Indiana. Did I mention to the list that PAR will now be throughout Indiana in the correctional facilities as of this year? I have the ok from the commissioner but do need to provide seeds.

I am still seeking seed and supply donations. Territorial Seed Company sent a wonderful box here that will certainly be the beginning and I have purchased numerous seeds myself. I have contacted America The Beautiful and am planning to purchase more seed through them. This is a huge project in itself.

In addition it looks like I will be teaching classes aimed at pregnant mothers, children and the general public on nutrition in the garden. PAR will be a part of that program. I am going to give each participate a tomato plant, lettuce seed and radish seed. If I can get supplies I will teach them how to plant the seeds as well. I have some but I do not know how big the classes will be or how long the supplies will last.

Finally, I have the beautification projects I am working on. I intend to incorporate vegetables in with the ornamentals so that people can see that they can grow a beautiful and useful garden. I wish I could get some of the big PAR markers. I may have someone build me some from wood.

My next step….Habitat for Humanity. I want to teach new homeowners how to grow vegetables.

I need lots of energy!

Sheri
