Re: Re: scanner!
I bought a new scanner in the fall for $149 from Staples. Not only does it
scan photos and documents, it has a special holder for scanning negatives
and slides, with which it does quite a good job.
It was a little tricky setting it up and learning to use it.
Once it is running, it does many amazing things. In addition to image
scanning, it serves as a photocopier without making a file of the document,
by sending it straight to your printer via the computer.
Best of all, it has built-in OCR by ReadIrisPro. That is, it can do optical
character recognition, scanning any document and converting it into digital
text which can then be reformatted or edited like newly typed text, with
about 99.5% accuracy.
That is pretty good but it means that everything must be rechecked. The
worst blooper so far was the conversion of the word "pomology" to the
non-word "pornology." You can see how similar an "m" is to the letters "rn."
The letter "I" and the letter "J" are also sometimes mistaken for one
another. But you can run a spellcheck on the OCR-produced document.
It is kind of frightening that any written work can be so easily lifted from
paper copies. If a $149 machine can do all this, just think what the high
level professional machines can do. Next thing you know there could be
illegal file swapping of garden books!
The scanner is a Hewlett-Packard item, the HP Scanjet 4070 Photosmart
Scanner. It is great!
With best wishes,
Betty
