Going digital - projectors

I see alot of slide shows put on by photographers and I don't know any photographers who use power point. That's a program favored by corporate PR people in my experience. Pro Show Gold is an excellent program for slide shows that I have seen (and it's very cheap, around $70). Most of the slide shows I've seen in the last few months (and that numbers more than 20 different photographers, each of whom made their own decision about what program to use) were presented
on i-view (both available for mac and pc). i-view has two versions, a pro version for $200 and a non-pro version for $50. I don't know the difference between the two (google i-view and you can learn all you need to know) but I know the pro version at least is also an image management program, so it kills two birds with one stone.

And as far as I can tell, both of these programs are extremely easy to use, especially pro show gold - I never see tech problems with either one, unlike power point, which does get squirrely..

These two programs seem to have the bulk of the market for photographers doing slide shows that I have seen. No one in this world uses power point unless they are coming from a corporate setting, in my experience anyway.

As far as which projector to use, the prices have been dropping like stones, but the key thing you need to know is how many lumens you want. If you are doing shows in large rooms or rooms with lots of ambient light, you need more lumens. A large auditoruium, you'll need 2000 or more lumens. A room with windows that can't be blocked, 1500, maybe 2000. A small dark room in a basement, 800 will do. There are plenty of places on line to learn about projectors - just google digital projector reviews and you'll find a few.
