Re: Japanese Beetles- oops forgot this one


That's probably why Japanese Beetles have never taken hold in the west. Here in Oregon they have been found more than once, but never show any development of populations. Probably because (contrary to the reputation) we have very dry, rainless summers. That would pretty much stop development of the grubs.

The beetle grubs need moisture in the soil to develop.  In the year following a dry summer or drought you will see a dramatic drop off in beetle populations.  We had two summers of serious drought in 2001 and 2002.  In 2003 and 2004 we had virtually no Japanese Beetles.  Very wet summers can also hold down the grub populations.
