rights

Doreen is absolutely right - which is not surprising. Hang on to ownership to everything you write.

I have been able to re-use articles in various publications throughout the twenty years I have been writing. Thank God my first editor explained first rights and ownership to me. My papers are in three different geographical locations and with some columns I have felt compelled to do some editing to make it fit the audience. I think getting the maximum payment for your writing makes sense, but, first and foremost, I believe the work should represent your best effort for each venue.

I turned a collection of columns published in three newspapers into a book (Earthly Delights: Gardening by the Seasons the Easy Way. Taylor Trade Publishing 2004) and am about to follow up with a second collection. Let writers like Allen Lacy and Henry Mitchell be our beacons of light. They too collected columns, published them in books and are still in print.

Happy New Year to all. I hope 2006 is a productive year for garden writers and a peaceful and just one for the world.
