Every situation is unique and its value must be weighed.  I've written 
articles for much less than my normal rate, because I knew the exposure or 
alliance to a certain publication would enhance my revenue or reputation in 
the future.  That's good marketing of one's talents.  We all market 
ourselves and our intellectual property.  In fact, I think that marketing is 
half of what it takes to be successful.  The writing and/or photography is 
sometimes secondary.
