General rule of thumb for publication is 300 dpi at whatever size the  
image will be reproduced. 6 megapixels will give you close to a full  
page image @ 300 dpi. The trouble with some of the cheaper cameras in  
this range is that the optics are not up to the pixel dimensions. So  
even though you have adequate file size, the image quality may still  
not be up to the publications standards.
