bad plant mixes/flower shows

I've always thought that all flower show attendees should be encouraged to see exhibits as they are: stage sets. They are fantasy scenery, whether the flowers they contain naturally bloom together or not. I find that most people who go to flower shows are appreciating the displays for this quality, and are not likely to try and duplicate what they see. I hear people who come away from a flower show inspired about a single plant, or stimulated by a lecture, but I've never heard someone say that they wanted to have a garden where the tulips were blooming in front of hollyhocks, just like they saw at the flower show. Since I started looking at the presentations as an art form, not horticultural instruction, I've enjoyed them far more.
