For NE gardeners

Joan Gibbs, of Gibbs Perennial Gardens in LeRaysville PA, died yesterday.
Joan may have been the best perennial grower and retailer in the East. I was
fortunate to live only a few minutes from her nursery, but every spring
busses and cars from as far away as Virginia and Massachusetts would make
the pilgrimage to the old farm way, way off the beaten path. They came for
the hundreds of varieties in thousands of pots, all grown to perfection and
sold at reasonable prices.

I'm not sure what will happen to the nursery and acres of stock plants. Joan
was a strong, willful, idiosyncratic, not to mention loud, woman, and I find
it hard to imagine Gibbs Nursery without Joan Gibbs. There is no heir
apparent, and I don't yet know what the plans are for this spring. I have
known Joan for decades, since she first put a few plants out on a table by
the road in front of her house. I hope I have not seen the operation come
full cycle.
