Magazines and books
Without revealing too much, I wanted to openly respond to a member who
contacted me offline to say that he/she felt that participants on the
listserv were afraid of discussing their experiences with magazines and
books out of fear of offending editors. I'm sure every editor I've worked
for, or have pitched an idea to, is on this listserv. And, I will see
some of them in Portland, if not sooner.
But I also know that without us, their pubs would be filled with blank
pages, and I doubt that they are looking for people who are not
proactive. I have not had any terrible experiences, just the ordinary
disappointments, so I wasn't thinking in terms of railing against
editors, but rather in terms of sharing information.
I'm interested in learning such things as, how many centuries did it take
to find a publisher for your first book :-)? How many times did it change
into a different book? Was anyone able to sell a book before they had a
major platform nationally or regionally? For those with a literary agent,
what do you see as the pros and cons of agent or no agent? Who's writing
for anything they can get and why? How long did it take to move from
30-cents per word to $1 per word? If you are getting $1/word from the
majors, would you still write for a smaller pub that couldn't afford that
much, if you liked the magazine? Do you ever do an article for cheap just
for the fun of the subject matter (humor, essay, etc.)?
Anyone game?

Lois J. de Vries
