As long as I've been writing and editing for magazines - since the 
mid-1980s - the fee has been $1/word. Interesting that there hasn't been an 
increase in almost 25 years, isn't it?

However, computers and the internet make the process of writing an article a 
heck of a lot easier than in the old days when as a magazine editors we 
literally cut and pasted the stuff that we were writing and editing, before 
we sent it the magazine's typists who would then retype everything into the 
typesetting magazines.
