Re: clivia

I don't move my clivia outdoors in summer like I do the rest of my
tropical/houseplants. I, too, have the orange clivia and it blooms
usually in March. I don't really do anything for this plant. It seems
to do well with benign neglect, from watering to fertilizer. I do
keep it in a south-facing window year 'round. It seems to prefer
being a bit pot bound because the year I divided the clivia, it
didn't bloom.

To really brag, though, I picked a Meyeri lemon from my plant to use
at my New Year's Eve dinner party. Another tough specimen whose
fragrance lured $14 from my wallet while walking through Lowe's
indoor plant section about four years ago in March.

This plant also seems to do well with benign neglect. I move it
outside in full sun in summer. Even though it's an evergreen in
warmer climes, it drops most of its leaves here in winter. This year
was the first time I actually got a full-size fruit that turned
yellow (photo available upon request). It blooms two or three times a
year, even indoors and the fragrance is well worth it, dropping
leaves and all, even if it never bore fruit.
