Re: clivia

My mother used to grow clivia and it almost never bloomed either.  
However, I have finally managed to give mine the conditions it seems  
to like. I started out with one tiny mail order plant  from Logee's.  
When it got big enough to bloom, it did it in June, which was not  
when the books said it would do it. As the plant multiplied in the  
pot I finally realized I had to divide it and got 11 new plants. Gave  
some away, and put the ones I kept in the bay window of my 110-year  
old leaky, 60 degree living room. Finally learned to keep them dry  
during the winter and then water them in February to instigate bloom.  
The last few years my 4 giant plants (if I divided them, I'd probably  
have 5 to 10 new plants from each pot) have bloomed amazingly. Two  
pots have sent up 5 to 7 flowering stalks. The other two more like 3  
or 4.  Also, the pots that have more light do bloom earlier. I carry  
them outside for the summer and keep them in constant shade. The pots  
are now so huge I can barely move them.
