Green Roofs
I don't have any figures close to hand, but I have done several articles on
green roofs. Green roofs (the thin-profile, usually functional, extensive"
sort that are frequently used in Europe, as opposed to deeper "intensive"
more aesthetically-oriented roof garden-type applications) have only been
around in the US for about a decade.
IF they are properly designed and installed, green roofs should last
considerably longer than conventional roofs, because the plants mitigate
wear and tear on the roof membrane better than conventional materials. There
are extensive roofs in Europe that continue to function perfectly after many
decades.
For engineering information, check out the excellent site of Roofscapes, a
company in Philadelphia (www.roofmeadow.com). For info on the best plants
for green roofs, check out www.greenroofplants.com.
