Methinks no one answered Richard's other question: If arborsculpture by any name is tree abuse, as one wag charged, then should bonsai and espalier not also be tarred with that brush? Bonsai is sort of the horticultural equivalent of foot binding, another ancient Asian fetish, but it's harmless. I can't see that shaping plants deserves to be called "abuse."
Cropping a dog's tail and ears? That's abusive. Pruning a tree? Have at it. Here, let me steady that ladder for you.
