Re: blackberries etc (the electronic sort)
I also use an ipod touch, and my husband has an iphone. I didn't want another cell phone, and we both find that our Verizon cell phones work in more places than his ATT iphone does, but I needed a way to carry my address book and calendar in a lightweight and always on me form. I also need to keep my calendar automatically synched with the one on my computer and the one my husband keeps. We enter our info in different colors so we can see when we're both going to be traveling and need to remember to find a dog sitter :-) We synch calendars, and I synch my bookmarks and contacts on my computer, through MobileMe.
The advantage of the iphone over the itouch, other than the AT&T coverage issue, is that the iphone will get an internet connection anywhere but the itouch needs to be near a wireless signal. So when I'm traveling to a speaking gig and get lost, if I had an iphone I could go to google maps and figure out where I was just by pulling over to the side of the road. With the itouch I need to park next to a public library, motel or restaurant with an open wireless signal to get on. Fortunately, I don't usually have a problem finding a signal since I'm speaking in developed areas.
To answer your question about speed, Kate, I just used my itouch to open the mail account where this list is sent, and I opened a couple of the emails where people had forgotten to delete a string of previous threads - it opened as quickly as it does on my MacBook.
I've had the ipod touch for a few months now and don't know how I did without it.
