Re: blackberries etc (the electronic sort)

I used a Treo (a Palm smartphone) for about 5 years and this year I
switched to the iPhone.

I'm not convinced it was the right move for me. Not only is AT&T
coverage spotty in some of the places I travel, but there are certain
things the iPhone cannot do that I really miss. Most importantly, on
my Treo I could search for something (person, place) and it would
bring up EVERYTHING connected to that something. Let's say I searched
for C.L. Fornari. It would bring up her name and address in my
address book, any emails to and from her that were still in the
memory, and any time I had her name in my calendar. That was SO
useful and the iPhone's search feature is comparatively weak. You can
only search within the address book. Big deal. Apple keeps saying
they're going to beef up the search feature but there have been
several software updates since I bought my phone and so far nothing.

Additionally, the iPhone keyboard is awful (even for me with no
fingernails)! I've gotten better over the last 6 months but it takes
much more care and correction to produce a clear email.

On the other hand, the map feature has saved me time and aggravation
on at least 2 occasions, which is worth something. But unless Apple
seriously steps up its game I may well go back to the Treo when my
contract is up. And I've been a Mac person my entire adult life. I
think the key is to decide which tasks are most important to you
before you buy.
