Re: Future of Newspapers
I am a newsprint garden writer well ensconced in fogydom, and I am just
hoping that newspapers outlive me, which seems like a good bet. In fact, I
have recently discovered that one newspaper is putting my column up on their
website, and I am mulling whether I should object or even admit that I
noticed. Sometimes my mulling takes a long time.
But looking at the other side of the electronic revolution in its present
status ...
While many if not most of my readers have Internet access, I would make an
onageristic estimate that well over 80 percent of them rarely if ever visit
gardening websites, except occasionally looking for specific information,
and do not read blogs. I understand the electronic focus of many on this
list -- it is an Internet list after all -- but I believe that a huge
majority of gardeners still get their information from words on paper held
in their hands over coffee. I think that is especially and overwhelmingly
true of garden reading that is not seeking particular information or
solutions. I am not obsolete yet, no matter what my wife says.
