botanical names

A few months ago there was a discussion on how to write botanic names - what
went into italics etc.
Yesterday I was talking to two ladies who are in charge of the SE Flower
Show, which is modeled on the Philadelphia Show where we include flower
arrangements etc. All the entries have to have common name plus botanical names
written correctly. This was straight forward until they came across a hand
written entry. So the question was raised - do the same conventions apply to hand
written script where italics are not really used. If not, how should the
botanical name be written.

Anyone know?
Thanks
Kate
