Re: How garden writers can help each other

One of our own, Debra Lee Baldwin, has done a superb job marketing her 
excellent first book: Designing with Succulents.  As a result of her 
independent efforts, she has been invited to be a speaker about the book 
all over the country, and she has been featured on television and 
radio.  She left nothing to chance.  For example, she asked friends to 
write reviews of the book on Amazon.com.  That gave her a great start on 
that site without the sometimes illiterate, overly critical reviews that 
sometimes turn up there.  As I write, the book has a sales rank on 
Amazon of 5,720!  That's an impressive ranking for a garden book almost 
two years after its publication date.  It's an impressive ranking for 
any book.  The book continues to sell well, due in part to how well it's 
done, but also because Debra was so thorough and creative about getting 
the word out.  She's presently working on a sequel to the first book.  
If it's not too late to recommend someone, she would be an excellent 
speaker at our GWA Conference in Raleigh, NC.  Topic: "Marketing Your 
Own Books: Don't Depend on Your Publisher."
