Many weeds are known to have viable seed for 50+ years. Under ideal conditions, reports of 20 to 50 year old vegetable seeds germinating are not uncommon, and I understand that the Millenium Seed Bank has germinated three species of plants from seeds that were 200 years old. I've had seeds from plants that I haven't seen in my garden for 18 years suddenly sprout and grow. "Wow," I find myself saying, "I forgot that I planted that!"

Castor bean plant is perennial where winters are warm enough, but it can act
just like an annual...growing fast, blooming, seeding, dying off with
winter, and then coming back like crazy from all the seed it drops. I am
still pulling castorbean seedlings each year from an area where I had some
growing more than twenty years ago! I've never let them get big enough to
bloom or seed...all these seedlings are from very old seed. Actually, I
never planted them in the first place, they came with the house when I
bought it...and I quickly chopped them all down (their pollen is perhaps THE
most allergenic of any that I've ever encountered). Anyhow, if anyone has
seen a plant whose seed persists longer than this, I'd be curious to hear
about it.
