Re: Age of germinating seeds continued....


To date, the oldest seeds are the arctic lupine (Lupinus arcticus) with germinating seeds found frozen and buried in the Canadian Yukon. Seeds were taken from an ancient rodent burrow that contained the skull of a lemming. Carbon dating of the nests and remains of Arctic ground squirrels found buried under similar conditions registered an age in excess of ten thousand years. Seeds of lamb's-quarters or pigweed (Chenopodium album) were found in a dig in Denmark and dated at 1700 years of age. Peter
