Jeff is absolutely right that this is the future and it is incredibly
exciting that publishers are adapting to this. But is no threat to
professional writers or photographers who will be working with
multimedia publishers. Garden publishers are traditionally behind the
times, but at some point they too will have to adapt to this as the
new audiences will expect more interactive media.
It is a threat to those writers who only do self publishing and can
not keep up with the technology demands of this format. Photographers
(many of whom are now videographers with the amazing capability of
hand held cameras) are adapting to multimedia and are in a much better
position to self-publish and provide content to this visual format.
Writers who are reasonably adept with the new media will be able to do
this (see Rick Darke's self produced video for the Wild Garden - http://www.rickdarke.com/wildgarden.htm)
but without the support of larger publishers it will be increasingly
hard for any self publishing to stand out. Marketing is everything in
the teaming sea of on-line content that is growing every day.
Unless Jeff's microbe team knows more about the technology that we do
I would not advice any subset of writers in this group to even hope to
keep pace with the professional publishers.
