lawns and global warming
Since lawns -- and getting rid of them -- are often a topic on this list, I thought I'd mention a new study from UC Irvine that came out this week, in case you haven't seen it. It says that although grass does sequester carbon in the soil, the greenhouse gases created in caring for turfgrass (mowing, dethatching, watering, etc.) negate the benefit. The researchers actually say that greenhouse gas emissions would be lower if lawns didn't exist.
