Re: helping landscapers become plant people

The comments by Charles Bowers of Garden Gate Landscaping drive me nuts.

"BTW money is the driver from the consumer. If we did it "perfect" most
all would not pay for it. They'd just find someone who will give them
a cheaper price and they honestly don't go a rat's paootie (technical
term) about the results. Cost is there motivator period.

Been at this for 45 years. Scream at the consumer, they are in the
drivers seat and we have to figure out how to walk a line in order to
put food on our families table like everyone does."

What about ethics? What about common sense? What about saying you simply
can't do a project because it's environmentally and unconscionably
irresponsible? Must the dollar always rule?

As a municipal wetlands commissioner and chair of the commission we were
forever receiving project plans from LA's and consultants that were in no
way protective of the environment let alone the wetlands. As a result the
plans were rejected for revision and resubmission resulting in more cost for
the client and more billing hours for the vendor. We'd see planting plans
that included invasives, endangered or threatened plants and plantings not
at all even deer resistant that would be destroyed in less than a year.

I'm not asking for perfect from LA's and landscapers. I am asking for
ethical responsibility.
