Rather than ZDnet I suggest you look at clickz.com  at 
http://clickz.com/ 
as a model. Put simply, it is a "killer" site that has endless examples 
of  "best practice"  for anyone going down the web publishing route. It 
is definitely worth poking around this site to see how a top web 
publishing site is put together.

Subscribe to some of their newletters especially the weekly one to see 
how to really do email.

Some of the key elements of the site are the use of sponsored sections, 
the use of guest writers and the ability to get new articles posted on 
the site delivered directly to you by email - you don't even have to go 
to their site! The web's original"give and you shall recieve" ethic 
lives on strongly at clickz. 

My only whinge about the site is that dropped a section on "Web 
publishing" that they used to run when they first started out.
