[GWL]: two topics merging
The list has interesting comments today following mine about writing and
subsequent threads about when readers garden and vice versa and whether web
users read magazines. In my mind the three things do come together and I
appreciate Claude's comments on possibilities. I have always seen my radio
and column work as a service career in a strange way - I answer specific
questions about growing plants every week, all year. Yes, we're in the deep
south, so many are practical: can I do this chore now? But others are
reflective and depend entirely on the mood of the day: my mother grew a
gladiola in Alabama in the '30's. Do you know its name? I respond to the
needs of my audiences in these venues.
As Jeff Ball says, so what's your point?
Perhaps we are seeing the front end of a trend (see the comments on the
return of vege gardening in hard times) that will lead us to meet the needs
of those gardeners and dabblers, and yardeners, in more direct ways. My
folks complain they can't get their answers quickly enough, so maybe that's
my cue.
My own hope would be that such a large writer driven site could have room
for independent sites to merge and use the same volume mechanism that used
to drive ad sales. I cannot get that kind of attention by myself, but
together maybe we can.
What's next?
