I've always had very satisfactory results with Fuji Provia 100, but have 
heard so many good things about Velvia I'm going to give it a try.  I agree 
100% that a tripod will make an immediate and sometimes startling difference 
in the quality of a beginner's work.  I look at shots I took 6or 8 years ago 
and shake my head: What was I thinking?  How could I have ignored all that 
crap in the background?
The main rule is: Keep pushing the button.  Film, no matter what kind you 
use, is the cheapest component in the making of good pictures.  Compared to 
the cost of being in the right place at the right time with the right 
equipment, it becomes almost inconsequential.
