Re: Big Lawn, No Lawnmower

Title: Message
There is no average lawn size.  In Chicago the lot size tend to be 30 by 125 subtract house, garage, sidewalks and a lawn about 2000 sq ft is about all you'll going to get.  About 40 miles out from Chicago, people have 5 acre lawn and mowing it with a Sears or Walmart 38" wide deck.  I think they should raise sheep.  We consult homeowners on how best to control lawn care.

I’ve been following reports of lawn size for 20 years and have never seen any accurate method.  In my own observations one must at least distinguish between city, suburb, and exurb/rural.  Probably east vs. Midwest, vs. west is wise as well.  In the suburban east I estimated the average was about 6000 square feet on a quarter to one half acre home site.  I’ve been in rural Michigan now for a few years and am absolutely amazed to see the average is well over an acre of grass.  Some crazy people are mowing 2 and 3 acres.

What I’ve also learned is that the techniques used to care for a 6000 square foot lawn is very very much different than what one does on an acre or more.  It is really two different projects; very few similarities.
