GWAA Region Vll Meeting in N.S. (Sept. 13-15)


Time's running out to register for the GWAA Region Vll meeting in 
Kentville, N.S. August 15 is the deadline. 
If you haven't heard about this event yet, here's a description of 
what we have planned:

Interested in a weekend full of interesting speakers, enticing garden
tours and fabulous food? This fall, the Garden Writers Association of
America is holding its Region VII meeting in Nova Scotia for the first
time. The event is scheduled to take place at the Kentville
Agricultural Research Station, Sept.13-15. 

The morning program for Friday, Sept.13, includes Larry Hodgson,
GWAA Region VII national director, speaking on 'Mind-boggling
annuals'. Kari Hjelkrem, owner of award winning Down-to-Earth
Landscaping in Wolfville, NS will be discussing organic approaches to
lawn care. She'll be followed by Bernard Jackson, founder of the
Memorial University Botanical Garden in Newfoundland with his
presentation on 'Gardening in Nfld.'

A tour of the Kentville Research Station rhododendron and azalea
plantings, and Blair House Museum will be conducted by Dr.
Peter R. Hicklenton in the afternoon. Dinner will be at the Blomidon
Inn (Squash & peach soup or seafood cocktail, steamed Atlantic
salmon with Fennel Cream or roast striploin) with Jill Cooper
Robinson as the keynote speaker.

Saturday morning speakers include Jamie Ellison on 'Notable Natives in
the Maritimes, Tissue Culture Technology by Tawnya MacNeil, a resource
Information Officer with the Ag. Development Instit. in Truro, NS and
former Senior Research Associate for Monsanto in St. Louis. Joe
Bidermann, the owner of award winning Bidermann Landscaping and Design
will present a slide show and speak on 'Natural Stone Revelations.' 

The group will be boarding a bus to Annapolis Royal  where they will
tour the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens with Jamie Ellison and Pat
Pelham as tour guides. The Queen Anne Inn has arranged for dinner.

On Sunday morning Allison Magee, former chairperson of the Nova Scotia
Association of Garden Clubs will highlight 'Reaping the Harvest from
Garden Clubs'. Carla Allen will wind up the speaker program with the
'Atlantic Round-Up, an introduction to many Atlantic horticultural
businesses with product samples for the audience.

Sunday luncheon is booked at the Grand Pre Winery, followed by a tour
and wine tasting, then it's back on the bus for a trip to the new
Irving Botanical Gardens, where director Don Hendricks will describe the many
marvels of this technological achievement. 

This event is a wonderful chance to sample the Annapolis Valley 
the 'Horticultural Heart of Nova Scotia'.  The price of registration
is $135 CDN and covers 8 workshops, 4 garden tours, 3 lunches, 2
dinners and transportation to and from tours and wine tasting.
Deadline is Aug. 15th and organizers have advised that there is a
limit of 40 people, due to space restrictions on bus. For more
