RE: Correct plant names

Graham,

When I entered Polygonum cuspidatum, this is the name the database pulled
up:

Polygonum L. (Polygonaceae) japonicum Meissn.

The site only offers one source for this plant, a wholesale nursery, Cook
Water Farm, with complete contact information, of course. The site also
offers citations, articles and books in which the plant has been discussed:

Fine Gardening. no. 69. (1999) p 77 fl. lf. AR

Horticulture Week. August 31, 2000. p 11 hb. PH

New England Wild Flower. vol 2, no. 3. (1998) p 22 hb. uc. PH

Organic Gardening. vol 43, no. 9. (1996) p 41 lf. hb. AR

Occasionally I won't be able to find the plant I'm looking for, but I almost
always do. My main purpose for using the site is finding sources for plants
and seeds, and I always double check all plant names in the RHS Plant Finder
as well as the AHS A to Z Enclyclopedia of Garden Plants.

Many updates have been made since 2000, but I imagine not every plant has
been updated since then.

Does anyone else use this source? What are your experiences?

Sarah, could you give us some idea of how its nomenclature and
comprehensiveness compares with other sources? If you search on an
invalid name does it tell you the correct one? Could you give us a
few examples, what happens if you submit Polygonum cuspidatum (a long
superceded name for Japanese knotweed)? Does it telll you the correct
name? The free trial focuses on Gingko biloba, but some of the most
popular cultivars in the US are not included. And there are no
citations after 2000.

It sounds as if this could be a very important reference, but it
would be useful to members of this list to know what you get for the
$39.95 a year.
