RE: Correct plant names

Thank you Sarah. So this looks like an excellent reference source for illustrations of plants, indexing the names with which they're captioned. It looks like a comprehensive, but slightly out-of-date, guide to where to buy plants. But it seems that it does not intend to give any guidance on the accuracy, or otherwise, of the plant names themselves.

Polygonum japonicum, Japanese knotweed, is now known as Fallopia japonica reflecting its close botanical relationship with Fallopia baldschuanica (formerly Polygonum balschuanica) and its more distant botanical connection with other plants once classified under Polygonum: eg Polygonum bistortum (now Persicaaria bistorta) and the common weed Polygonum aviculare which remains a Polygonum.

Graham,

When I entered Polygonum cuspidatum, this is the name the database pulled
up:

Polygonum L. (Polygonaceae) japonicum Meissn.
The site only offers one source for this plant, a wholesale nursery, Cook
Water Farm, with complete contact information, of course. The site also
offers citations, articles and books in which the plant has been discussed:

Fine Gardening. no. 69. (1999) p 77 fl. lf. AR
Horticulture Week. August 31, 2000. p 11 hb. PH
New England Wild Flower. vol 2, no. 3. (1998) p 22 hb. uc. PH
Organic Gardening. vol 43, no. 9. (1996) p 41 lf. hb. AR
Occasionally I won't be able to find the plant I'm looking for, but I almost
always do. My main purpose for using the site is finding sources for plants
and seeds, and I always double check all plant names in the RHS Plant Finder
as well as the AHS A to Z Enclyclopedia of Garden Plants.

Many updates have been made since 2000, but I imagine not every plant has
been updated since then.

Does anyone else use this source? What are your experiences?

Sarah, could you give us some idea of how its nomenclature and
comprehensiveness compares with other sources? If you search on an
invalid name does it tell you the correct one? Could you give us a
few examples, what happens if you submit Polygonum cuspidatum (a long
superceded name for Japanese knotweed)? Does it telll you the correct
name? The free trial focuses on Gingko biloba, but some of the most
popular cultivars in the US are not included. And there are no
citations after 2000.

It sounds as if this could be a very important reference, but it
would be useful to members of this list to know what you get for the
$39.95 a year.

In my opinion, the University of Minnesota Plant database is the most
comprehensive source. You need a subscription to the web-site to access its
information.

Is there a "Plant Finder: book for U.S. sources similar to the one
published
by the RHS?

I think it's interesting that my recommendation of a British book as
the last word on correct plant names drew so few responses from the
 >> (predominantly American) membership of this list. I'd be very
interested to know what garden writers actually use to ensure that
their plant names are correct. Or is no one especially interested in
  the subject?

As evidence of the importance of this issue, a recent Timber Press
book has just been reviewed in The Garden (the Journal of the Royal
Horticultural Society), now the best selling garden magazine in
Britain. "The standard of nomenclature in the book is poor... In many
instances the proper distinctions between variety, subspecies,
cultivar and hybrid have not been made," says the expert reviewer.
"Some of the names are not in current usage..." In a serious and
supposedly authoritative book, this not really acceptable and the
review shows that authors will be found out.

Getting the names right is absolutely basic. How do other members of
this list go about ensuring nomenclatural acccuracy?
