computer help needed

Hi All,
First let me apologise for asking a question not really designed for this list. However, I've run into a problem for which I can't find a resolution. (The people from whom I purchased the system say the problem lies with MS and, of course, MS says the retailer is responsible for support.) I'm hoping that, amongst you exceptionally intelligent people out there, (Yes, I am shamelessly buttering you up.) one of you might have experienced a similar situation.  I base this on the fact that we are all using computers to earn money.
 
If I use incorrect terms please don't refer me to the computer equivalent of the RHS name finder.
 
I have MS-Works as my word processing programme. It's in Windows XP. The programme is excruciatingly slow in responding to keyboard inputs. Commands delivered via the mouse seem to be not as slow but still not as quick as "normal."
We have four accounts (family members).  With the exception of my account, MS-Works operates normally and without problems within the other three.
Is it possible to have an "active" link embedded within a document that might cause this problem? If so, how do I find it?
We're up to date with Norton anti-virus protection and Sympatico says we are clean of spyware(?).
 
I am currently reduced to writing my columns in Outlook Express.
Any advice would be very much appreciated,
