Re: Toma Bellas

Title: Re: [GWL] Toma Bellas
Promoters have a very annoying habit of doing this sort of thing.  It's dismaying how often I see Asian pears sold as "apple pears" and described as a cross between an apple and a pear.  Zante Currant grape (aka Black Corinth) is sometimes sold as a cross between a currant and a grape.  Etc.  It's another good reason for scientific names in everyday use.  At least that way an idiot promoter would have a harder time creating a false description of a plant/fruit/vegetable.

I'd bet a bunch "Toma Bellas" are just stuffing tomatoes.  The more common
variety is the Yellow Stuffer, but there are red ones available.  Seed
Savers' regular catalog offers "Striped Cavern," red with yellow
stripes.  Regular breeding could eliminate the stripes if necessary, but I
think there are regular red stuffing tomatoes too, in which all of the
seeds and the placenta are attached directly below the stem, and the rest
of the tomato is hollow.  Margaret Lauterbach
