I agree that it's very likely you have too many processes running. 
XP is set up by Microsoft to have a huge number of "services" going
at start up - most not needed.  The Black Viper website has a list of
all of them and what they do and whether they are generally needed by
XP home or XP Pro.  Takes a while to go through the entire thing and
XP's service list and turn off what is not needed, but it will help
in making things run better.  This URL takes you to his WinXP index
page...all good reading if XP is your OS....scroll down to "services"
and check those links.

You might also want to check your temp. files and get rid of those
you don't want and check that your browser cache is either set to
clean out at a reasonable amount of disk space or clean it out
manually.  Defrag your hard disk and run scandisk just to make sure
all is in order, too.  I have discovered that when you have more than
one account set up on XP, nothing seems to be universal, so your set
up is not, necessarily, the same as the other users.

If you go through all this and still have a problem, then try
Google's search of newsgroups

and see what information about sluggish behavior in XP you can find
and post on pertinent groups like:

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support
microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics
