Re: Plant Identification
Someone please correct me if I'm in need of correction, but I believe a
seedling that exhibits characteristics different than those of its presumed parents
is not accurately called a "sport." A sport is a mutation arising on a part
of a plant, e.g., a pink flower on a red flowering rose. This is the source of
Blushing Knock Out (tm), Rosa 'Radyod', a sport of Conard-Pyle's famous Knock
Out (tm), Rosa 'Radrazz'.
The plant in the situation Sheri describes is a chance seedling. E.g., Phlox
paniculata 'Shortwood' is a chance seedling that arose in a stand of Phlox
'David' and is the presumed offspring of 'David' and 'Eva Cullum'.
I guess that makes Eva the daddy and David the mommy. Only in the garden, eh?
