Ah, the good old microclimate! Know exactly what you mean. Rosemary overwinters beautifully snuggled up close to the house on the warm, east side. Elsewhere on our property it winterkills. And the dogwoods on our hill always bloom about a week after our neighbors' dogwood, which are all at the foot of the hill, lining the highway, where they get reflected heat from the pavement. Fascinating, isn't it?
Still, we do have to have some basic general guidelines to start us off with. As they say in flower arranging -- "Once you know what the rules are, you can break them, knowing full well you're breaking them, but also knowing that, with your knowledge base, you have good reason to believe you can get away with it."
