Re: what zone is Washington DC in?

Lina, I assumed that when someone asked about D.C. they meant only the land
in that political area. In the area bounded by Interstate 95 in Rhode Island,
then the Merrimack River and I495 in Massachusetts one can find USDA zones 5A
through 7B and a very few microclimates that are 8A. In Rhode Island over a
distance of fifteen miles one can find 7 weeks difference in the length of
growing season. I've learned this from personal observation and the several
nurserymen I get to talk with as well as semipro hybridizers who supply the nursery
industry. I have two friends in the tree care business who exploit the
different climate areas by having their base of operations away from the coast by
many miles where land is cheaper and then serving clients in Newport and
adjoining towns when conditions around Providence are less pleasant for climbing
etc. I first encountered academic presentation of climate zones when I was 14.
I had already enjoyed the suburbs of Rochester, NY and Miami, FL, then I had
one and a half years in San Mateo, CA. Splashing in the Pacific in January and
February was exciting for a kid who was accustomed to snow a foot and a half
deep in the yard and having lots of snowmen of considerable size. I had an
excellent teacher for high school earth science and we had lots of discussions
of what affects the weather because the weather affects us.
