I think home gardeners need more information on proper rose planting techniques. I am in zone 5 and have wintered over (and moved) many roses. The secret? I bury the graft three inches below the groundâthatâs it. Most of the Roses I purchase come with tags clearly marked zone 7.

 

This year I have not even fertilized my garden and the roses are doing fine. The reason? I havenât had time to do anything in the flower bed this year including water.

 

Last year I grew approximately 42 Roses, most of them new additions to my garden. Yes, I lost a few, about six due to late frost and just being weak when they arrived here. This year I have added about sixteen more with about three of those being lost again due to being weak Roses. I am not seeing a real problem with blackspot or any other disease. Yes, the Japanese Beetles adore Roses but tansy planted close to some help stop a lot of the problem. I also pick them off.

 

I have several Knock Out Roses planted in my yard, however I personally prefer the Antique and English Roses due to their flower shape and fragrance. The Knock Out Roses are performing very well, some in rock and some in clay.
