According to Bill Radner, Knock Out's creator, deadheading triggers a
hormone that curtails buds from sprouting on that particular cane. You can
thump the dead flower with your thumb to send the dried petals flying, if
you are a neatnik and must have perfection, but you should leave the hip
with stamens intact.
