Readers, attendees name Hydrangea best new plant
Hydrangea macrophylla ssp. serrata 'Mikata Yae' from Pride of Place Plants was named best new variety at the NMPRO New Plant Pavilion, which took last week at the ANLA Convention and Executive Learning Retreat in Hawaii. Voting took place on site and on the Internet. 'Mikata Yae' produces 1-inch, blue, star-shaped, double florets from midspring to midsummer. It?s a compact, midsized shrub that should reach 4 feet high in 10 years. It's hardy in Zones 5-9. It grows best in moist, well-drained soil with pH from 4.5-6. It prefers afternoon shade. 23 plants were showcased at this year's event.
