Re: topiary

Hello Katy,
I used to do some version of an article advising treasure hunts at the "bit box" stores each late spring. You have to know what you are looking for and know your plants... but they have always carried the occasional find. Getting better and better at carrying plants normally thought of as "high end" inventory. Lowes in particular is gaining a local reputation for great plants and good prices. This week the grocery store had some of the shrubs outside in 2 gallon and one galloon containers at prices below what I can sell for here, and they were stock carrying Color Choice labels. Some is being touted by wholesalers as not available until spring 05 ...
I keep my "must have" folder in the van at all times and make stops at the discounts and garden centers both. Note: I do not consider half dead plants a bargain... quality plants or nothing.
I say go for the article on height maintenance shrugs. Almost all evergreens used in the trade for landscaping are, to some degree, not plants that really belong there. Most are eventually grow to large trees unless they are constantly clipped upon. do a follow up with right plants for the right place... small shrubs that mature out to fill a small space.

Landscape maintenance people love these... you will have them back once or twice a year just to clip and trip your poodle shrubs. High maintenance shrubs.
This is why I am surprised at the bog box stores selling them. The market they are selling to are not generally the ones who get landscape people in every month to sort the shrubs out.  Next yr they are going to have shaggy looking poodle-cuts and no idea when or how to prune then - spring, summer, never.

It would seem to open up a whole new area to address in publication.
