How to structure the deal
Hi all
I would love some input on how to structure a deal.
I have been asked by a group of local government agencies to write
pieces for their quarterly agency newsletter. They also want to
distribute those pieces free of charge to community groups and home
owners' associations for inclusion in their newsletters (and probably
websites).
The content is content that I have used, do use, and will be using in
the future (like a photo) so I hesitate to sell the pieces outright
(i.e. sell the copyright). I had proposed selling them a specific
number of uses (i.e. share the pieces with 10 other organizations)
for a set amount of money. Their concern is that the pieces gets to
the community newsletters, the agency loses control over
distribution. I expect they are correct. The people who put those
kinds of newsletters together tend to be fairly unsophisticated about
copyright issues and there is no way that the agency will be able to
manage the number of times it appears beyond where they send it.
So what do I do? Do I charge a set amount and specify that the
pieces be published with a notice that any not-for-profit or
educational organization may reproduce the piece as long as it
includes my copyright? Or???
Thanks for your suggestions!
