Hi Maryann,
How are you? How funny that this question went from Truro, Nova Scotia,
which is 30 minutes from where I live, to you (in the Midwestern US, if I
remember correctly) to me back in Nova Scotia, and now the answer is
bouncing back to you to be forwarded back to Truro.
At any rate, apparently the "June lily" mentioned by Montgomery is actually
a simple, garden variety white narcissus. These bulbs must have been very
popular for gardens in the Maritimes in her day. Here in my neighborhood, a
patch of them bloom every spring on the lot where the one-room schoolhouse
used to be. The schoolhouse was built in 1886; I'm going to ask around to
see if anyone has any idea of when the narcissi were planted.
Please forward this to Carol for me, as your message did not include her
email address.
Sincerely,
Flora

Subject: [GWL] Another name for june lily
A reader from PEI has asked me which lily L.M.Montgomery (author of Anne of
Green Gables) was referring to when she wrote 'June lily'. Is it a common
name for a specific lily or perhaps she was just referring to a lily that
bloomed in June?
Thanks for any insight!
Cheers
Carol
