Re: India
The reality is that large publishers have been outsourcing their printing
to China for DECADES. It is a global economy whether we like it or not
and we can no longer hide under a rock about it. One only has to pick up
a magazine or newspaper today to realize that there are many American
"writers" who cannot write in English. Their editors either can't or
won't edit for grammar, punctuation, or consistency of style.
Anyone who worked on the production side of publishing during the
invention of desktop publishing can attest that most clients would rather
pay less for barely acceptable work than a higher price for excellent
quality work. They seemed to feel that the incremental improvement was
not worth the price for something that is time-limited and gets thrown
away (brochures, periodicals). But the software has evolved to the point
that, today, it produces a quality product that is every bit as good as
yesterday's classically-trained commercial artist's.
Outsourcing follows a predictable cycle: Vending out, then taking
everything back in-house; then vending out again. The probability is that
the Indian companies will get better at copyediting as time goes on and,
thus, acquire more work, just as the Chinese did with printing. We'd
better get used to the idea.
Competition is everywhere; WE compete with one another for a microscopic
amount of work. Marianne Binetti gave an excellent talk on this very
issue (competition) at the Long Island conference. She reminded everyone
that it is the garden writer's job to interest more people in gardening
so that there will be a bigger pie for us all to share. Americans'
strength has always been in our ideas, our inventions, and our
innovations. We lack a definable American Culture because we constantly
re-invent ourselves. I'm confident that we garden writers are up to the
challenge.

Lois
