Re: Taking books on tour
Just to broaden this discussion a little--I tell venues that they need to
provide books. I give them a one-pager from my publisher on how to order
books for events. Some of the best experiences I've had with this:
--A group that bought a copy for every member (200+!) and included it in the
ticket price.
--A garden club that partnered with a local independent bookstore, who sent
over an employee with books, credit card machine, etc. That way, the
bookstore got signed copies to take back to the store, and we all know how
important relationships with independents are.
--An organization that ordered a box of books, sold them at the event as a
fundraiser, and kept the remaining books to use as raffle prizes or to sell
at future events. (They had books from previous authors at my event, which
was great to see--their own little bookstore)
While I could, in theory, make a little money on the markup between my
author discount and the purchase price, by the time you factor in shipping,
having to deal with resale license, sales tax, and credit cards, and having
unsold inventory sitting around, I've decided it's just not worth it. The
second option--partnering with a bookstore--is really my favorite. I'd much
rather see the bookstores make a little money, because without them, where
would we be?
I've never had a venue refuse, although sometimes it's required an extra
push.
