I live about 80 miles northwest of Chicago, on the Wisconsin border. We
didn't see our first Japanese beetles until 2006. The first year, the
invasion was horrible and overwhelming. 2007 and 2008 were bad, too. This
year, I seeing very few beetles, and they are leaving the roses alone. They
seem to prefer grapevines and apricot trees. Last year, they skeletonized
the apple trees. This year, they are ignoring them. I think the cool
temperatures have slowed hatching of the grubs. That's about the only good
thing about this year without summer.
