Re: GWA finances

GWA finances aren't secret at all. One breakfast or lunch at each symposium is designated as Annual Meeting and it includes all kinds of reports about what the organization's doing. That includes a full financial report. And anyone is free to ask any and all questions about it, as they are about the board report, committee reports, etc.

It has always seemed to me that the organization's finances are well managed.

The foundation is a separate nonprofit. Along with Plant a Row for the Hungry (a great cause), it awards small scholarships to hort students interested in writing. Ordinary donations to the foundation are tax-deductible, but the money raised by the annual raffle really adds to the foundation's coffers, I'm sure, and enables it to do even more good work.

GWA dues go to providing the services members get from the group -- free legal advice, newsletter, membership directory, etc.

hi TC. I saw your question about GWA finances on the writers list. I have had the same train of thoughts.

I was at the last symposium and I do not remember seeing any actual numbers anywhere at all. I think the budget and financial statement should be published to all members each year.

But then I was the one who made the stink about overselling and waitlisting spots at the symposium, then was publicly informed that the symposium fees we pay don't cover its costs (implying I really had no right to complain.)

So umm I think it may be a touchy subject. Especially when you look at how the organization is managed and how those assorted services are procured. It isn't public, as far as I know, so we must rely on the (volunteer) officers to approve it all.

In fairness I have never brought this up to an officer or other "authority" of GWA. I'm sure everyone is doing the best they can. Running GWA is probably akin to herding cats.
